History of Cinco De Mayo
Cinco de Mayo is often confused with Mexican Independence Day, which is actually on September 16th. However, Cinco de Mayo holds great importance for the Mexican and Chicano communities. In response, President Benito Juarez issued a moratorium on foreign debt payments on July 17, 1861, with the promise to resume payments after a brief two-year suspension.

The Spanish and English refused to accept Juarez’s decision and instead invaded Mexico to secure their payments through any means necessary. While the Spanish and English eventually withdrew, the French remained determined to establish an empire in Mexico under Napoleon III. Some argue that the true motive behind the French occupation was a response to the growing power of the United States and the Monroe Doctrine. Napoleon III believed that unchecked American prosperity would eventually lead to the emergence of an independent power.
In 1862, the French army commenced its advance. Led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, 5,000 ill-equipped Mestizo and Zapotec Indians secured a victory over the French army in what would be known as the “Batalla de Puebla” on May 5th. In the United States, this battle became synonymous with Cinco de Mayo. Over time, Cinco de Mayo has become highly commercialized, and many perceive it as a time for enjoyment and dancing.
